Take a white eraser and rub off the build up of goo on 4 connecting points on the back of the 305. Also gently, clean off the pins on the docking station.
i had a few issues with mine but I ended up buying the 405 and gave to 305 to my sister. I hope you get it worked out. I registered for 3 marathons yesterday. I totally forgot to use the code for SLC $15 off... err
Ah - good to see I'm not the only one! I thought it was just me that had to hold it in place on the charger for 10 mins at a time! There is clearly a design fault...
I once had to get a new cradle. Call Garmin support. They are very helpful if you are patient enough to wait the 15 to 20 minutes it will take to talk to an actual person.
Haven't had to use rubber bands but have had to remove it from the cradle, switch it off and try again a few times to get a connection. Lately it has been acting well, touch wood. Hope you get it sorted, it must be a real pain.
I thought I was the only one with that issue. I've got a Garmin 305 too, and it does the same thing some times. Haven't figured out why it charges sometimes and other times not. If you get an answer, let me know. I use a Quick Clamp that can be bought at hardware stores. Not exactly a pain in the ass, but definitely irritating.
Nice pic! The issue here is that Garmin's are not really well designed or built. I've owned 3 and the first one simply stopped charging altogether. I now have the 405 and the battery life is less than 7 hours. Not good for ultra runners.

You probably have a bad connection.
Thanks Shawn, I have tried that...it worked for several months, but now...nada!
Here is the guy to ask:
Ray at

He is the Garmin guru and may be able to help!
I was also going to suggestthe eraser "trick" - it's worked for me!
i don't but i'm wondering what the eraser trick is that marlene mentioned...

Oh man! I would cry for days if my Garmin was on the fritz!! I'm sure there is a way to fix it, though! Good luck!
